HOW IT WORKS: HONEY BEE SOCIETY

The above is a link to a fascinating article in the most recent issue of Popular Science on honey bees and their genetically pre-determined roles within the hive.

A team of researchers discovered epigenetic chemical tags within the DNA of said bees which determine their behavior and jobs. These scientists found that humans can also have similar tags within their genetic makeup that effect our behavior, especially after being subjected to trauma, like say, child abuse… yikes.

The thesis? “If these chemical cues can be changed in bees, scientists may find new treatments for people with psychological trauma, mood disorders, and learning disabilities too.”

So basically, we may be able to have that Stalinist utopian society after all. You’ve got three choices: nurse, forager or drone. I’m pretty sure the role of queen has already been taken (O-boob-ma). Also, you’re probably not going to get to pick.
